Street Style: Our 3 Favorite Colors For Deeper Hues
When it comes to men’s fashion, camouflage jeans are definitely on target for the fall. I also love, love, love the look of oversized camo jackets on women, when paired with a high waisted skirt or pair of pants I think it gives a really chic vibe. A personal favorite of mine is this camo jacket from the Gabrielle Union Collection and NY&C because of the large lapels which make it diverse enough to style up or down.
I freely admit that camouflage is not technically a color. The reason I think camo is such a winning combination with melanin is because it’s a fun layer that can accentuate a range of wide skin tones through contrast. If you’re more yellow, the undertones of your skin will be juxtaposed with the darkness of the greens and browns. And if you’re more chocolate, your skin will be highlighted through the contrasting tans and medium browns.
When it comes to yellow, whether it’s muted or fluorescent it’s a very complimentary color on dark skin tones. Subconsciously, yellow has always made me think of sunlight and gold. I remember being in history class in middle school and seeing depictions of princes and princesses during the ancient Mali empire with yellow gold plaited into their hair. That image was permanently seared into my brain and ever since I have associated yellow with opulence and commanding attention.
A pairing that I really like with yellow is white. As pictured above, the gentleness of white with the boldness of yellow makes for a very well balanced and charming outfit.
or me, black is a color that can be both feminine and masculine. You see, Rihanna can wear it on her lips and Huey P. Newton can wear it on his shoulders, sporting a leather jacket as a member of the Black Panther Party. There is a strength and decorum to the color black that simply cannot be credited to any other color, therefore when a woman of color wears it she looks unstoppable. I love that an all black outfit makes you look like a force to be reckoned with, I mean who could forget Halle Berry in an all black bodysuit in Catwoman? Was Catwoman a good movie? Girl please. But did Halle look fierce, sleek and powerful? Without a doubt! If you want to look like you just exited the red carpet or a black tie affair, the answer is simple, adorn your body with the color black.
